Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.
-President John F. Kennedy
Dateline: Sunday April 22, 2018 and intended for publication on Earth Day with Pluto stationary in Capricorn. Not only is the quotation from John F. Kennedy deeply meaningful to all clear-thinking people, but he became our nation’s first Sun-sign Gemini president and this zodiacal placement has so much to do with the air and breathing. On August 5, 1963 – three months before his assassination and one day before the eighteenth anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima – the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (banning nuclear detonations in outer space, underwater and in the atmosphere) was signed by the Soviet Union, Great Britain and the USA, a treaty considered one of President Kennedy’s greatest achievements.
One reason I am starting this feature in the above manner is the quotation is also given – with President Kennedy’s own voice – at the close of one of my favorite movies, Thirteen Days(about how John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert F. Kennedy helped to save the world from nuclear annihilation during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962).
The main reason for this article is two-fold – (a) in the recent focus on the #metoo and #never again movements concerning sexual harassment and gun violence, we often forget about how pollution/toxins/poisons are affecting our lives, the Earth, and its myriad of inhabitants, in such a dangerous way all the time, and (b) that I discovered an enormously significant link between the birth of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (December 2, 1970) and the First Nuclear Chain Reaction (December 2, 1942).
Oddly enough, I had recently watched a superb documentary film on HBO, Atomic Homefront, detailing “St. Louis, Missouri’s atomic past as a uranium center for the Atomic bomb and the governmental and corporate negligence that led to the illegal dumping of Manhattan Project radioactive waste throughout North County neighborhoods.” As stated in a brief promotion of the movie: “Our film is a case study of how citizens are confronting state and federal agencies for the truth about the extent of the contamination and are fighting to keep their families safe.”
I recommend this documentary whole-heartedly and it turns out that the main federal agency not responding very well to the deeply upset people living in St. Louis is the EPA. Therefore, even though I will be writing in this series of reports about the egregious efforts to prevent the higher functions of the EPA from taking place by the current administrator Scott Pruitt (born May 9, 1968), the EPA in the past has not always lived up to its lofty calling – partly because our government continues to hide the truth about how lethal the effects have been of radioactivity in our land, food, waterways and the air we all breathe.
The Founding of the EPA
It was a remarkable book – Silent Spring* by marine biologist Rachel Carson (published in 1962) – that became a major catalyst and rallying cry for this country to do something to curb the widespread poisoning of our natural resources going on for many decades. One subject concerned the proliferation of the pesticide DDT, but this was merely one problem of literally hundreds related to how human beings – particularly via corporate and governmental abuse, secrecy and corruption – were making our planet unsafe for Life in all realms (human, animal, plant, and mineral). *In Part II, I will connect this book to one of the more amazing telepathic events I ever experienced with Nancy de la Vierra (see her other features on this website).
It turned out that under President Nixon the year 1970 became crucial relative to environmental concerns. It was in that year when the first Earth Day began on April 22 – in a connection that used to be celebrated as Arbor Day (associated more with planting trees and which still occurs on different dates in the USA according to the state in which you live). Then, through an executive order, the U.S. Environmental Agency was founded on December 2, 1970 with William D. Ruckelshaus becoming its first administrator (sworn in two days later).
William D. Ruckelshaus (born July 24, 1932) is much more recognized historically as the Deputy Attorney General of the USA who resigned, following the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Elliot Richardson on October 20, 1973 during the so-called “Saturday Night Massacre,” conducted by President Nixon in order to fire Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox. Their honorable protests helped to bring forth the eventual resignation of President Nixon in disgrace on August 9, 1974. As we will see in Part II, William Ruckelshaus (originally a staunch Republican) led the EPA twice (he was appointed again to head the agency under President Reagan for several years), but he became an outspoken supporter of truly protecting the environment, eventually supporting democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and then Hillary Clinton, and being honored with the presidential Medal of Freedom.
Why Focus on the EPA Now?
Yes, the current administrator of the EPA (Scott Pruitt) is under fire for all kinds of financial and ethics violations and there are astrological reasons for why his tenure may be coming to a close. His Sun in Taurus is within 1 degree of the potent Juno-Saturn conjunction for the EPA while his Mars in Gemini is exactly opposite the EPA Neptune placement.
In a strange coincidence or perhaps fateful synchronicity, both Scott Pruitt and the first agency administrator William Ruckelshaus have identical Jupiter locations at 27 degrees of Leo because they are born three Jupiter cycles apart (a time-period of nearly 36 years, with Jupiter having a 12-year orbit through the zodiac). Both of their Jupiter positions are on the fate/destiny-oriented South Node of the Moon for the EPA (27 degrees of Leo) – which happens to be opposite America’s Moon-Pallas conjunction in late-Aquarius. However, while Scott Pruitt is plagued with a nearly-exact and potentially confusion-generating Jupiter-Neptune square in his birth chart, William Ruckelshaus is born with a Mercury-Jupiter conjunction in Leo trine to his own Uranus in Aries as well as Mercury in Sagittarius in the EPA birth chart – a geometric pattern known auspiciously as a Grand Triangle in fire signs.
Including acting directors of the EPA, this vitally important agency has had a total of 26 administrators in its nearly 48-year history. Most recently former administrators Christine Todd Whitman (Republican) and Gina McCarthy (Democrat) have called for Scott Pruitt to step down or be replaced. It is noteworthy that the EPA natal Jupiter is located at 22 degrees of Scorpio (just 1 degree away from the EPA Vesta, an asteroid closely affiliated with safety and security measures). And transiting Jupiter in 2018 is making three passes over its own placement in the EPA chart as well as the placement for Vesta. The first two passages occurred in January/February, this month of April (in the last two weeks during the intense scrutiny of Scott Pruitt’s questionable leadership abilities), and will happen for the last time at the end of September and the beginning of October.
Jupiter will move on to make its first union in 12 years with the EPA Sun in Sagittarius during the Winter Solstice and Christmas time-period this year when Jupiter also conjuncts the Sun for the First Nuclear Chain Reaction chart. Jupiter – the ancient King of the Gods planet – should represent qualities of benevolence, providence, the Power of Positive Thinking, Faith, Trust and a large number of auspicious-fortunate-success attributes as long as Jupiter is acting for the highest good. However, Jupiter also has a shadow side of pride, arrogance, and thinking of itself “Above the Law” and represents any kind of large-scale activities and changes. Most recently – especially under Scott Pruitt’s reckless behavior – we are witnessing the abrogation of dozens of regulations that have been put in place for decades to protect the environment from harm. It is clear that Mr. Pruitt’s association with lobbyists and corrupt executives in the oil-gas-chemical industries is making a mockery of the concept of “protection” in the title Environmental Protection Agency.
Important Note about Secrecy: One of the terrible links between the birth of the atomic age with the First Nuclear Chain Reaction (December 2, 1942) and the birth of the EPA (December 2, 1970) is that in each chart a planet is located at 22 degrees of Scorpio. On December 2, 1942 that planet was Mars – the traditional ruler, when negative, of violence, bloodshed, and war. On December 2, 1970 that planet was Jupiter, whose various themes were just indicated in the paragraph above. My main astrological mentor was Dane Rudhyar and in his re-interpretation of The Sabian Symbols in Astrology by one of his teachers, Dr. Marc Edmund Jones, Rudhyar gives the following image and keynote for 22 degrees of Scorpio: “Hunters Shooting Wild Ducks” Keynote: The socially accepted release of an individual’s or a group’s aggressive instincts.” (from An Astrological Mandala by Dane Rudhyar). Note: The 22 Scorpio degree placements for Jupiter and Mars also form exact and off-kilter, 150-degree links to the USA Mars at 22 degrees of Gemini. This connection reveals another cause of why the government’s activities regarding atomic-nuclear energy, weapons and waste-products, as well as its sometimes clandestine operations in regard to protecting the environment create so much discord to our po
